Vranov Castle

Vranov Castle

First reference to Vranov as a boundary guard stronghold can be found in Kosmas Chronicle as early as around 1100. In 1687 a Vienna architect Jan Bernard Fischer from Erlach began with a baroque reconstruction. The Hall of Ancestors became the dominating feature of the castle at that time. It has an oval ground plan and was decorated by frescoes with antique motifs (Jan Michael Rottmayr) and by statues of owners of that time – the Althan family (Tobiáš Kracker). Next phase of reconstruction after 1723 was carried out by a Vienna master builder Antonín Erhard Martinelli.  It was when the eastern entrance wing and the double staircase with statues from mythology were built (Lorenzo Mattielli). In the 80s of 18th century the southern and western wings were completed and this way today’s ground plan of castle courtyard was created. By the end of 18th century castle interiors were all furnished in the classicism style. Beside preserved furniture Vranov pottery can be seen in several rooms as well. It was produced in a local manufacture between 1799 - 1882.

Vranov dam

The biggest water reservoir on the Dyje river. Dam wall 292 m long and 60 m wide was built according to a Swiss project from 1930 to 1933. On the right side of the dam wall there is a power station with three still operating turbines.  It used to be the biggest valley dam in the Czech Republic with length of lake over 30 km it reaches as far as to Podhradí nad Dyjí.
Nowadays Vranov dam serves most of all as a favourite recreational centre (centres at Vranov nad Dyjí –
Vranov Beach, Lančov Bay, Chvalatice, Bítov - Kopaninky, Bítov - Horka, Chmelnice, Farářka, Podhradí nad Dyjí). Valley dam traditionally called “Moravian Adriatic” belongs to the warmest dams in the country.
